Inventory folders

Inventory folders that match your real shelves

A useful inventory structure should help someone find a physical item. Pallet’s folder-first workflow lets you build a simple tree around the way your stock is actually stored or processed, then add items directly into the right place.

A simple workflow

From physical stock to a clear record.

01

Choose one organizing rule

Start with category, physical location, or workflow stage—not all three at once.

02

Build a shallow tree

Add only the subfolders that make a real item easier to find.

03

Name the exact location

Use the item location field for details such as Shelf B · Bin 4.

Folders for browsing, locations for finding

Folders answer broad questions such as clothing versus shoes, received versus listed, or garage versus storeroom. The location field answers the last practical question: which shelf or bin? Keeping those jobs separate prevents a folder tree from becoming hundreds of tiny branches.

  • Example folder: Clothing / Denim
  • Example location: Rail A · Section 3
  • Example workflow: Received / To photograph / Listed

Start smaller than you think

A new system often fails because its categories are too ambitious. Begin with five to ten folders that everyone understands. Add a subfolder only when browsing the parent has become genuinely slow. The best structure is the one a tired person still follows while receiving or packing stock.

Move the structure as the business changes

Seasonal stock, new product categories, and an additional storage room can change the right organization. Pallet keeps category relationships and item locations editable, so the digital structure can evolve without rebuilding every record.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Can folders contain subfolders?

Yes. Pallet supports a folder tree for a clear, browsable hierarchy.

Should every shelf be a folder?

Usually no. Use folders for meaningful groups and the location field for precise shelf or bin details.

Can I add an item from inside a folder?

Yes. Starting there preselects that folder in the new-item flow.
